ACCORDING TO LEGEND,
the lion dance dates back over 2000 years in Chinese history and there are many versions as to how lion dance arrived. One story says it came when the Emperor was saved by one in the most realistic dream of his life. Chinese lion dances can be broadly categorized into two styles, Northern (北獅) and Southern (南獅). The Lion dance was used as entertainment for the imperial court. The dance is acrobatic and is performed for entertainment, good luck, joy & happiness for the coming years.

It can also be very symbolic when performed as a ceremony to bring luck and fortune. The southern lion exhibits a wide variety of colour and has a distinctive head with large eyes, a mirror on the forehead, and a single horn at center of the head. These dances can have 2 or more performers with traditional chinese music to accompany the performance.

ASSOCIATION TO KUNG FU,
the lion dance has close relations to kung fu and the dancers are usually members of a local kung fu academy. Kung Fu Students practice to become masters in the combative chinese skills passed on from generation to generation, the dance shows their time and dedication to this ancient art.

Therefore, lion dance performance have been a common sight in Chinese culture, whether it's Chinese New Year, grand openings, weddings, birthdays, or special functions. The lion dance performance generally depicts a lion stalking for food (lettuce) along with 'lai see' (red pocket) which is fed to the lion via the crowd. These red packets contain money from guests which express their gratitude for the blessing and the performance. After eating the lettuce, the lion regurgitates the greens back to the business or audience, which signifies the showering of good luck.
